国際シンポジウム開催のご案内

真宗総合研究所の指定研究「国際仏教研究」では、12月15日（金）から17日（日）の３日間、ハンガリーの学術交流協定校エトヴェシ・ロラーンド大学（ELTE）東アジア研究所との共催により、下記のように国際シンポジウムを開催いたします。

「世界の宗教的伝統におけるさとりと知恵と変容」

開催趣旨

人類の歴史の大半を通じて、数多くの宗教的伝統は「知恵」を、人間の生の充足に重要な役割を果たすものとして捉えてきました。例えば仏教においては、「知恵」の成就が「さとり」（enlightenment）と呼ばれますが、それはその人間のあり様が、それ以前とそれ以後において根本的に「変容」するような事柄です。また、多様な宗教的伝統において「知恵」は「光明」というモチーフによって象徴され、その光に触れることが、救済に預かるために必要な「変容」をもたらすとされてきました。

言うまでもなく、「知恵」の内容や役割には、宗教ごとに大きな相違があります。そこで、このシンポジウムには、多種多様な宗教伝統の研究者を招聘し、それぞれの伝統における「知恵」の内容や、その成就のための方法、さらには、それが人間の生にどのような「変容」をもたらすとされているのかについて発表してもらいます。それを通して、広大な人類史において「知恵」と「さとり」とがどのように理解されてきたのかについて考察し、さらには一連の考察を通して、これまでの人類が、何を人間の生の成就にとって真に不可欠なものとみなしてきたのかについて明らかにしたいと思います。

発表者について

大谷大学の研究者６名（うち「国際仏教研究」研究員４名）とELTEの研究者５名を中心に３日間で22人の研究発表が予定されています。今回ご参加いただく研究者の多くは「国際仏教研究」の活動の中で御縁をいただいた方々です。初日15日（金）午後には、宗教学の世界的な権威で本学でも教鞭を執られた長谷正當先生（京都大学名誉教授、大谷大学元教授）による「親鸞の往生思想——正定聚に住するということ——」と題された基調講演があります。

3. 新田智通（文学部仏教学科准教授・「国際仏教研究」研究員）
   The Emergence of the “Human Buddha” in the Nineteenth Century Europe and the Prejudice of the Enlightenment: Focusing on the Ozeray and Burnouf
4. Ama Michihiro（国際学部国際文化学科准教授・「国際仏教研究」研究員)
   Unbreaking the Broken Commandment: A Buddhist Reading of Hakai
5. 井上尚実（文学部真宗学科教授・「国際仏教研究」研究員)
   The Enlightenment and Transformation of King Ajātaśatru according to the Mahāyāna Mahāparinirvāṇa sūtra
6. Sepideh Afrashteh（大谷大学客員研究員、イランから来日中）
   “Illumination Wisdom” for Achieving Enlightenment in the Book of Red Wisdom by Suhrawardī

以上６名の発表者の他に、木越康（文学部真宗学科教授・「国際仏教研究」研究員）、藤枝真（文学部哲学科教授）、Robert F. Rhodes（名誉教授）にもセッションの司会・応答者としてご参加いただきます。

The Shin Buddhist Comprehensive Research Institute at Otani University, in Collaboration with Eötvös Loránd University’s Institute for East Asian Studies, will be holding a symposium from December 15-17, 2023, devoted to the theme of “Enlightenment, Wisdom, and Transformation in the World's Religious Traditions.”

Short description of the aims of the symposium:
Wisdom has been understood as a key element in the fulfillment of human life throughout the world’s religious traditions across most of human history. That wisdom is often symbolized with the motif of light and the attainment of wisdom—what the Buddhist tradition refers to as enlightenment—has been broadly seen as a transformative experience critical to human salvation.

There is clearly a great diversity across religious traditions regarding the content of that wisdom and the role that it is understood to play in human fulfillment. By having scholars of a wide variety of religious traditions present about the content of wisdom, the ways in which it is achieved, and the transformative role that it is said to play in human life in the different traditions that they study, this symposium aims to consider how wisdom and enlightenment have been understood throughout the broad span of human history. By developing a shared sense of the diverse roles that these concepts have played in religious thought, we hope to develop a more robust understanding of what our predecessors in the long course of that history held was truly essential to human life.
