東方仏教徒協会は、仏教本来の意義を欧米に伝えることを主な目的として、鈴木大拙、佐々木月樵、赤沼智善らによって設立されました。本協会では、設立当初より英文雑誌『The Eastern Buddhist』の出版を行っています。また近年では公開セミナーや公開講演会の開催を通じて、仏教研究の成果の公開を行っています。

この度の公開講演会では、Brian Ruppert 氏を講師にお招きし、「Sacred Works (Shōgyō聖教): Scriptural Traditions, Ritual Repertoires, and Networks in the　Transformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism」というテーマにてご講演いただきます。みなさまのご参加をお待ちしております。

概要

What was scripture to the Buddhists of medieval Japan? This paper explores a novel form of scripture that emerged in monastic cloisters (inge院家) and semi-independent bessho別所. Distinct from canonical Buddhist texts (issaikyō 一切経), these scriptures were specific to Dharma lineages yet often transcended school boundaries. The esoteric Shingon school played a pivotal role, with centers at Ninnaji, Daigoji, Kajūji, and Mount Kōya, among others, producing innovative rituals and texts. Figures like Shinkaku, Kōzen, and Kakuzen advanced new rites such as the Turning the Wheel (tenpōrin hō転法輪法) subjugation and the Wooden Tree Empowerment (misogi kaji御衣木加持), integrating divine powers to enhance ritual efficacy; and, instructions and related commentary were transmitted in excerpt-notes (shō 抄) and protocols (sahō 作法), typically in orikami 折紙 or butterfly-binding (detchōsō 粘葉装)form. Finally, epistolary writing became a significant genre of sacred works, paralleling scriptural traditions in other religious contexts, particularly within Kamakura period “new” schools.
