Major in Buddhist Culture(Master's and Doctoral Courses)

Japanese Culture(MA, PhD) / Asian Cultures(MA, PhD)

The program in Buddhist Culture is divided geographically into Japan and East Asia, especially China, and methodologically into historical and literary approaches. That is, the many Asian cultures related to Buddhism are divided into Japanese Studies and East Asian Studies and investigated from historical and literary points of view in an attempt to reconstruct a synthetic Buddhist culture that transcends specific academic areas. The teaching staff includes specialists in history and literature working on the ancient, medieval, pre-modern and modern periods, systematically covering a broad area of research.

In addition to specialized lectures on history and literature, joint seminars are conducted by staff from both areas working together. These seminars provide students with an opportunity to develop a broad perspective unbiased by either historical or literary methodologies. They complement the in-depth research into individual specialized fields pursued under the direction of a professor in the chosen field.

The university’s collection of numerous important materials on Asian history and literature, particularly those related to Buddhist Studies, provides an unsurpassed environment for the study of Asian culture.
