Admission Guide (Doctoral Courses/Master's Courses)
A Graduate School Entrance Examination for International Students is held for international students wishing to enter the graduate school. Examinations are given separately for the master's program and the doctoral program.
Applications are accepted in October, and examinations are given in December of each year. For further details and specific dates, please refer to the separate booklet, "GUIDE APPLICATION AND ADMISSION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS".

1. Number of Students Admitted
A small number of international students will be admitted to each course in the master's program and the doctoral program.
2. Method of Selection
(1) Master's Program
(1-1) Japanese language exam (sixty minutes)
Note: Applicants who have taken the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) given by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) in the subjects of ‘Japanese as a Foreign Language’ and ‘Japan and the World’ and obtained a total score above 360 points are exempted from the Japanese language exam. Applicants who have passed Level One of the Japanese Language Proficiency Exam given by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services are also exempted.
(1-2) Exam in one's major field of study (sixty minutes)

(2) Doctoral Program
(2-1) Japanese language exam (sixty minutes)
Graduates of the master's program of Otani University or other Japanese university master’s program are exempted from this exam.
(2-2) Second language exam (sixty minutes)
Students can choose from English, French, and German exams, but may not take the exam in their native language.
Graduates of the master’s program of Otani University who have obtained four credits from the subject of “Textual Study of Other Cultures (English, German, French, Chinese)” are exempted from this exam.

4. Materials to be submitted
- Application form
- Certificate of (expected) college graduation or M.A. diploma, along with transcripts
- Medical certificate
- Certification of proficiency in the Japanese language (Required for applicants to the master's program who wish to be exempted from the Japanese language portion of the entrance exam)
- Plan of study
- Letter of recommendation written by either the president or one's academic advisor at the university or institution last attended
- Copy of master's thesis or equivalent, together with an abstract written in Japanese (for those seeking admission to the doctoral program).
- Materials related to the payment of expenses
- Registration card for the examination
- Two photographs
- Copies of passport or Certificate of Alien Registration
5. Language used in the courses
Courses in the graduate school are all conducted in Japanese. There is no special course or subject for international students only. Students whose native language is not Japanese are urged to acquire a solid grounding in written and oral Japanese before applying.
