Project based curriculum: developing practical skills in the local community

This curriculum of this department emphasizes fieldwork that applies knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom to helping solve the manifold problems of the community. By participating in projects developed in collaboration with the local government, NPOs and other organizations, students are trained in skills useful in real life. In these fieldworks, students visit institutions in Kyoto city around the university or outlying villages faced with depopulation and aging population and take active part in projects to help solve the problems confronting the local community. Some of the projects include: using the local media to help disseminate information, participating in nursing care and child-rearing, taking part activities for increasing communication among people and helping maintain local traditions and customs, and finding new uses for vacant houses.

Support for this project-based curriculum is provided by the Regional Collaboration Room and Practice Support Center.
